Getting used to the sounds. The smells. The sights.

Or maybe more accurately... getting used to the absence of them.

It’s amazing how loud “civilization” is once you leave it behind.

I missed the perceived sounds of safety…

The breeze moving through leaves.

Birds negotiating territory.

The soft percussion of rain on a roof.

These sounds have weight to them, but they don’t demand anything from me.

For the first time in years, my nervous system seems to be exhaling.

I’ve spent the last three years “in society”.

After years of living off-grid, my husband and I moved downtown into an old railroad town. At the time, it felt romantic. Walkable. Historic. Easy.

The kind of place where artists are supposed to thrive.

Instead, from the very first week, I developed headaches.

I needed naps every day.

Sirens ricocheted between buildings.

Exhaust fumes drifted through the streets.

The building shook with every large truck that flew by…

An angry religious zealot regularly screamed sermons that echoed through downtown corridors like a fire alarm no one could turn off.

I couldn’t think straight.

At first I thought it was preference.

I thought maybe I had become too picky.

Sensitive.

Difficult.

Preferring the Wild of Nature.

But after enough time, I realized something important.

This wasn’t about preference.

It was about regulation.

My nervous system was not at ease.

So naturally I did what many of us do.

I tried to solve the problem with logic.

I tried to “fix” it… but that didn’t work… so…

Maybe a nicer neighborhood.

Maybe a more upscale district.

Maybe better retail shops and restaurants.

More culture.

Better aesthetics.

Surely that would help.

What I discovered was that more culture doesn’t necessarily mean more peace.

Sometimes it simply means more stimulation wrapped in prettier packaging.

The new backdrop may have resembled Downtown Disney.

Yet… the nervous system knows the difference.

What ultimately pushed me over the edge wasn’t noise.

It wasn’t smells.

It wasn’t traffic.

It wasn’t a new town crier.

It was a quiet man. Actually 4 of them…

But one particular man …far to young to be living the life that had become his…

A vagabond.

A schizophrenic drifter who became fixated on me.

At first, he was simply part of the scene.

The way many troubled people become part of the human landscape.

Everyone knew him.

Everyone had a story for him.

His mother died young.

His father was a good guy.

He went to California and never came back the same.

My favorite… “He is on a spiritual journey”

People explained him.

People sympathized with him.

People excused him.

What nobody seemed interested in discussing was the impact he was having on the people around him.

Particularly women.

A philosophical question wrapped in sound.

A narrowing.

A label.

A way humans point at the wild mystery of a thing and say... there. That. Cat. Bird. Mother. Wife. Failure. Success.

As if naming something tells us what it is... instead of simply allowing the experience of it.

I’ve had a long relationship with names.

Of course, it started with my birth name.

Cheryl Milum.

That one comes with a whole lotta baggage.

Sometimes even the sound of Cheryl makes me cringe. Not because of the letters themselves... but because of the imprint behind them. The sound of a parental figure disappointed about something. Demanding something. Correcting something.

The nervous system remembers tones better than syllables.

My other parental figure had a simpler name for me.

Pumpkin.

Sweet on the surface.

Until I was old enough to understand tone.

Funny how names can spoil.

Then came high school.

Casper.

Followed by Lobster and Oompa-Loompas... courtesy of my pale skin and a regrettable encounter with Estée Lauder’s “tan in a bottle” …somewhere in the late 80s.

Then... my first official legal name change that I truly loved.

Ryan and I were bound to adventure almost immediately.

Within our first year of marriage, we left behind nearly everything we thought we were supposed to be and built a tiny house to live in the middle of nowhere.

And here we are, over a decade later, in a little house off the beaten path.

How did we get to this unknown land?

That answer starts years earlier, somewhere between quiet dissatisfaction and curiosity.

Ryan and I stumbled across minimalism at exactly the right moment. Tiny House Nation arrived like clockwork. We were already primed for something radically different because the reality we had been taught to expect wasn’t holding up against the version of the American Dream our parents had worked so hard toward.

The conventional path felt increasingly unstable, expensive, disconnected.

So we asked a dangerous question:

What if we simply went after the life we imagined?

Not someday.

Now.

First came the tiny house.

Designed, built, and moved in …within six months.

We committed fast, maybe irrationally fast, but once we locked onto the idea, there was no casual curiosity left. We were in.

Tiny house living. Off grid. A cabin through winter. Then a school bus project waiting on the horizon.

We were tested more times than I can count.

Moments that invited us to quit. To return to normal life. To take the safer route back into familiar systems.

But we found the Kodiak School Bus.

That spring, we rebuilt it.

And then we lived in it.

For over a year, our home was a converted school bus parked at a KOA campground.

Campground showers.

Tiny living.

Neighbors grilling dinner. Wood smoke drifting through the evening air.

Strangely, it felt like community.

Like a temporary village where everyone had quietly agreed that life was meant to be lived fully, enjoyed intentionally, slowed down enough to notice.

Peaceful.

Simple.

Alive.

A lot like our new little neighborhood off Route 66. The wood pecker is busy in the cool evening breeze. The birds chirping eagerly. The smell of new wood in the fire.

But we couldn’t live at the KOA forever.

Our original plan had been to head west. Desert land. Wide open possibility. We never would have made it out there.

Then Missouri entered the story almost accidentally.

A friend surfaced with an invitation to stop at his new compound. Just seeing Missouri through fragments of his Instagram feed was enough for us to make an absurdly bold decision:

We bought five acres sight unseen.

Within months, the pandemic was beginning to tighten its grip, especially in New York where we were living. We were already planning to leave behind the Metropolis… why not now?

So we gave away our car.

Let go of everything that didn’t fit in the bus.

And set sail toward unknown lands.

Why Missouri?

That question has followed us from the beginning.

And now I can finally answer:

Because that’s where Lebanon, Missouri, is.

Because somehow, through all the twists and detours, we were always heading toward this little bungalow.

Not as a finish line.

As an anchoring point.

Roots for the next chapter of the adventure.

But Route 66 was not a straight line.

Before Lebanon, there was Versailles.

Three years of mostly off grid living in a 100 square foot school bus with two black cats in the middle of the woods. Adopt a ridge.

We were mesmerized by nature’s simplicity.

Trees.

Birdsong.

Weather as a daily companion.

…and perhaps the neighbors wondering cow.

The quiet beauty of needing less.

Honestly, we could have spent the rest of our lives there.

If it weren’t for being human.

Because humans need more than beauty.

We need connection.

Community.

Belonging.

Eventually, we sold the bus.

Later, the land.

And moved back toward people.

From downtown to uptown. A historic motor inn somewhere in the middle.

In some ways, we drifted too far back into the very systems we had once intentionally walked away from when we first accepted this improbable quest to become adventurers in our own lives. Together.

Our philosophy had always been simple:

“Learn from creating your own experience.”

Not from theory alone.

Not from inherited narratives.

From living it.

From testing it.

From seeing what remains when the fantasy meets reality.

Eventually, what we found ourselves seeking was not escape from the rat race, but balance.

Our first stop outside the woods was a small railroad town. A place that had drifted quietly off the beaten path sometime after the railroad’s decline.

It didn’t quite fit.

Or maybe we didn’t.

But for a while, it held us.

We found unexpected belonging at a historic motor court, where an extended family called the place home while inviting travelers to step backward into another era. Mid-century nostalgia. Roadside stories. Temporary neighbors becoming familiar faces.

There was something comfortable about it.

Something human.

By then, we had been removed from bigger cities for years. And curiosity has a way of tapping us on the shoulder just when we think we’ve settled.

So when we discovered a dynamic studio apartment in an downtown capital city, curiosity won.

We traded humble bus living for boujee hermits downtown.

Suddenly, our world looked very different.

We could step outside for a latte just a few doors down.

Browse a bookstore on an afternoon walk.

Slip back into the rhythm of density, culture, convenience.

It was exciting.

Refreshing.

A reminder that parts of us still loved the pulse of city life.

But like some of the environments before it, it didn’t offer the deeper peace and community we were actually seeking.

Timing is always impeccable.

One thing pulls while something else pushes.

And somehow, almost before we realized it was happening...

we relocated further south.

The beautiful Ozarks.

The winds carried us to a railroad town off Route 66.

Now we have our little house.

We have trees.

Bugs, birds and bunnies.

Flowing water.

Peaceful neighbors.

Downtown nearby.

Space to slow down.

Space to root.

Not quite wilderness.

Not quite city.

Something in between.

A place where adventure and stability finally agreed to share the same address. Space to anchor before the next leg of the journey reveals itself. Because this isn’t really a story about tiny houses, buses, minimalism, or Missouri.

It’s the story of two people willing to question the map they inherited, build a life through direct experience, and keep becoming who they were always meant to be.

One voice pushes. Another panics. Another shames. Another performs. Another numbs. And somewhere beneath the crowded inner committee is a quieter capacity, one that doesn’t bully you into change or flatter you into denial. It doesn’t need to win arguments. It doesn’t even need to be dramatic.

In the Quantum MeMoir framework, we call that capacity The Advocate.

Two ways to understand the Advocate

Subjectively, you can relate to the Advocate as spirit, soul, Higher Self, the inner guidance that feels wise, calm, and strangely intimate. The part of you that seems to know what’s true even when you’re scared.

Objectively, you can relate to the Advocate as an observer point of view. A mental stance that can witness thoughts, impulses, and emotions without becoming emotionally tangled with them. It’s the part that can say, “A wave of shame is here,” instead of “I am shame.”

Same phenomenon, opposite lenses.

And that dual framing matters, because Carl Jung outlined a map for what happens when the inner world is run by the conditioned personal center.

The Jungian view: ego is not meant to be the sun

In Jung’s model, the ego is necessary, it’s your “i,” your day-to-day identity, your personal sense and continuity of story. But the ego is not the whole psyche. It’s a state, not the world.

Jung’s Self (capital S) refers to the totality and organizing principle of the psyche, conscious and unconscious, personal and archetypal. His term Individuation, in plain terms, is the process of becoming a whole person by bringing your life into a more honest relationship with that deeper organizing center.

Quantum MeMoir assists in moving the ego off the throne and into healthy relationship with the Advocate.

Discernment is the interface of that relationship.

Not “a perfect voice.” Not “a spiritual bypass.” Not “positive thinking.” The Advocate is the capacity that helps you tell the difference between guidance and compulsion, between truth and conditioning, between authentic direction and a performance loop.

Why journaling alone isn’t enough (and why Quantum MeMoir is different)

Many people journal like the ego is writing a press release:

• explaining

• justifying

• rehearsing arguments

• narrating pain in circles

The Advocate vs. the inner committee

When you’re trying to identify the Advocate, you don’t need mystical certainty. You need reliable discriminators.

Here’s a simplified rubric. Use it in real time, or during your end-of-day reflection.

Tone + Tempo

• Advocate: quiet, steady, spacious, often simple

• Shame / Critic: sharp, moralizing, “should/must,” urgent

• Fear / Protector: fast, catastrophic, scanning for threat or withdrawn

• Approval / Performer: polished, pleasing, strategic, overly agreeable, scanning for how to be perceived

Body Effect

• Advocate: grounded, more available, sometimes courageous

• Shame / Critic: tight, small, performing, clenched

• Fear / Protector: activated, restless, defensive, flooded or numb

• Approval / Performer: elevated out of the body, smiling through tension, overextended, socially alert, unable to rest

Outcome of Inner Dialogue

• Advocate: one next step that increases coherence; relief and stability

• Fear / Protector: avoidance, control, compulsions, “anything but this feeling”

• Approval / Performer: self-abandonment disguised as competence; doing what earns acceptance instead of what feels true, followed by resentment, exhaustion, or emptiness

Important Jungian note: the Advocate is not “nice.” It can tell you hard truths. The difference is that it doesn’t degrade you to deliver them. It aims for integration rather than punishment or image-management.

Quantum MeMoir as pattern-recognition: How the Advocate Becomes Trackable

If you only listen for “the right answer,” you’ll miss the Advocate, because the ego will try to imitate it.

But if you track:

• the voice

• the body

• the behavior

• the result

…you start to see something unmistakable:

The Advocate consistently moves you toward coherence.

That coherence might look like:

• telling the truth sooner

• making a cleaner boundary

• choosing the courageous small action

• admitting what you actually want

• stopping a pattern you’ve been romanticizing

• committing to a healthy habit or lifestyle change

Individuation is not an abstract spiritual achievement. It’s a sequence of choices that gradually align your lived life with your deeper center.

A 7-Day Experiment: “Train the Advocate Signal”

This is an invitation into discerning the Advocate using the 7 Core Spheres. Keep it light, consistent, and honest.

Daily setup (7 minutes total):

1. Write the date.

2. Name the day’s Sphere. (See “The Day’s Sphere Prompts” below)

3. Log three moments from the last 24 hours when you felt pulled, pressured, hooked, or unusually clear.

4. For each moment, apply the 3-Voice Rubric and label the likely speaker: Advocate / Critic / Protector / Performer.

5. End with: “If the Advocate is navigating, the next step is…” (one sentence)

Day 1 — Purpose: “What is the Advocate protecting?”

What is the deeper reason I want to hear my true guidance right now?

Prompt: What is the most repeated inner script this week?

What are these patterns trying to organize into? What’s the lesson attempting individuation?

Track: Where is shadow material asking to be neutrally acknowledged?

Day 6 — Express: “One courageous proof”

What is one small act that proves I trust the Advocate more than the old looping patterns?

Goal: It can be doable in 24 hours.

Day 7 — Refine: “Write the Advocate’s instruction manual”

What are my personal markers that I’m hearing the Advocate vs. the Critic vs. Protector?

Deliverable: a 7-line list titled “How the Advocate communicates with me.”

The individuation result: a new center of gravity

Jung’s individuation isn’t about becoming agreeable, enlightened, or unbothered. It’s about becoming less split. Less run by unconscious complexes. Less governed by inherited scripts. More oriented around an inner authority that can hold paradox, shadow, longing, fear, and truth without collapsing into any single one.

That’s what the Advocate offers: the capacity to stay present long enough for the Self to center you.

And that is exactly what Quantum MeMoir is designed to do, record personal experience into trackable data, and turn “inner guidance” into a holistic relationship you can actually strengthen.

Begin Listening for the Voice That Does Not Abandon You

The Advocate is not another voice trying to dominate the inner committee.

It is the part of you that can sit at the table without panic, shame, performance, or avoidance taking over the room. It does not need to be the loudest. It does not need to prove itself through urgency. It becomes recognizable through coherence, through the steady feeling that something within you is finally telling the truth without turning against you.

That is why this work matters.

When you begin tracking your inner voices, your body responses, your repeated loops, and your next coherent moves, you begin building a relationship with the part of you that can be trusted. Not perfectly. Not dramatically. But consistently enough to become a new center of gravity.

It is not about forcing yourself into healing. It is about studying your lived experience with enough compassion and structure that the pattern begins to reveal itself. The inner committee may still speak. The Critic may still criticize. The Protector may still panic. The performer may still reach for approval.

But over time, the Advocate becomes easier to hear. And once you can hear it, you can begin to follow it.

But underneath the soft music and cosmic language is something far more practical (and honestly, more interesting):

Your brain is a prediction engine.

It is constantly rehearsing what to expect, what to notice, what to brace for, what to repeat, based on what has been repeated before. So when people say “I keep ending up in the same patterns,” that isn’t a moral failure.

It’s a learning system doing exactly what learning systems do:
stabilizing the familiar.

And if that’s true, then the path forward is not more willpower.
It’s better training data. That’s where Quantum MeMoir becomes l more Self-science.

The Myth of the Conscious Driver

Most of us move through life with a quiet assumption in the background: my conscious mind is driving this whole thing, that I’m the one steering and directing my day in real time.

• “I decided.”

• “I chose.”

• “I know what I’m doing.”

But a lot of behavior isn’t chosen in the moment. It’s cued. It’s automated.

It’s initiated by body states, context, and learned associations long before your rational mind writes the press release explaining what happened.

The conscious mind is not useless, it’s powerful.

But it’s often late. Which means: if you want real lasting change, your job isn’t to yell at yourself from the cockpit. Your job is to study the autopilot.

The Subconscious Doesn’t Speak in Logic. It Reveals in Pattern.

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in personal growth: People try to navigate with the subconscious using logic. But the subconscious doesn’t run on logic.

It runs on:

• repetition

• emotional charge

• association

• prediction

• safety cues in the body

That’s why a single insight rarely changes your life. Not because you didn’t “get it.” Because insight doesn’t automatically rewrite the pattern. Repetition does.

Your nervous system doesn’t update from a TED Talk. It updates from lived data.

The Real Mechanism: Rehearse + Tag + Forecast

When people say things like “your subconscious stores programs,” it can sound dramatic, but the underlying idea is scientifically useful: a lot of your behavior runs on learned, automatic patterns shaped by repetition, emotional charge, and context cues, often outside conscious awareness.

The system changes through what it repeatedly rehearses, emotionally tags, and predicts.

• What you rehearse becomes easier to repeat.

• What is emotionally tagged becomes prioritized.

• What is predicted becomes perceived as “true.”

This is why negativity bias matters: your system is built to treat threat as more important than comfort.

It’s why familiar discomfort can feel safer than unfamiliar improvement.

It’s why you can “want” something and still resist it, because your deeper system is not optimizing for your goals. It’s optimizing for safety and predictability.

So the question becomes: What kind of data am I feeding this system?

Quantum MeMoir, as Individuation.

In Quantum MeMoir terms, the practice of using your Daily Spheres (Purpose, Ground, Intend, Observe, Connect, Express and Refine) as a tracking + pattern-recognition system allows you to:

1. Track what’s actually happening (not what you wish was happening).
   Think of this like taking honest notes. What did you do, feel, avoid, or repeat today, without polishing it into a better story.

2. Name the pattern with minimal moral judgment.
   Don’t make it “good” or “bad.” Just call it what it is: I shut down when I feel rushed. I scroll when I feel uncertain. I people-please when I’m afraid of conflict.

3. Choose a micro-shift that is repeatable.
   Not a life overhaul. A tiny adjustment you can actually do again tomorrow, like one slow exhale before responding, writing one sentence, or stepping outside for two minutes.
