A sharp, authoritative rap had vibrated through the back door, and her body had immediately launched into the ancient choreography of suburban conditioning.

A piece of wood shakes, an involuntary signal fires through the nervous system, and the human being scurries toward the entrance with an apologetic smile, ready to offer herself up to whatever random entity happens to be standing on the porch.

Two feet from the deadbolt, the internal emergency brake engaged.

Molly halted in her socks, staring at the weathered door. A quiet, slightly incredulous inner voice surfaced in the mudroom:

Wait. Why am I opening this door?

Peering sideways through the glass of the window, she spotted a man standing on the porch and a woman off in the grass. The man possessed the distinct, inflated posture of authority. He wore a reflective vest and the quiet expectation of compliance that usually parts the suburban seas. He ended up being the county assessor, accompanied by an assistant, having arrived completely unannounced with a camera to photograph her house.

Obviously, living within city limits means her 1940s bungalow was technically subject to exterior property valuations. But Molly could not help noticing that the city seemed to confuse jurisdiction over a roof-line with an easement across her personal life and nervous system.

They had no idea if she was in the middle of a client call, deep in an artistic groove, or simply existing as a person who wished to remain undisturbed in her own home. There was only the entitlement of the knock, the presumption that whatever was happening inside ought to be instantly abandoned because an “official” had arrived on the porch steps.

Molly did not unlock the door.

Instead of swinging the door wide, she cracked the side window enough to be seen, addressing the assessor through the screen like a peddler arriving uninvited at a clear boundary.

The assessor experienced an immediate system glitch.

His entire operational script relied on a standard suburban reaction: a flustered homeowner opening the door and stepping aside for official city business. Finding himself addressed sideways for formal identification, through a narrow gap in a window frame threw him completely off track. Molly watched him stand on the porch, momentarily stranded between his official clipboard authority and a woman who simply declined to perform the expected role.

Standing there by the sill, Molly recognized the comedy of the moment, but she also spotted her next strategic refinement.

Speaking through a cracked window was an improvement, yet it still required getting up from her work, crossing the floorboards, and offering her physical presence for an unannounced visitor.

The true evolution was already mounted beside the trim.

A recently installed Ring Doorbell Camera was her new door attendant. Next time, she could stay present in the study. She could sit comfortably with her warm mug while a calm, disembodied voice drifted out of the little plastic doorbell box, dismissing the clipboard brigade without her feet ever touching the hallway rug.

Still, as the two figures retreated down the yard toward their vehicle, Molly had to laugh at the sheer absurdity of the rotation.

Her front porch had seemingly become an open audition stage for the outside world. First, there were the roving salespeople who treated a closed entrance like a temporary obstacle. Then came the persistent young men in starched white shirts, knocking during an afternoon nap to debate whether inviting someone to church technically counted as selling. And now, municipal officials flashing badges, expecting an immediate audience on a random weekday.

There was always a knock at the door.

Most people spend an entire lifetime obeying that Pavlovian reflex. Modern society drills it into everyone: hear the bell, drop your focus, drop your boundaries, and present yourself for inspection. It was automatic compliance dressed up as good manners.

Yet watching the assessors do their business from the window, Molly found herself drifting into a much stranger, existential inquiry.

Why was there always someone rattling the gate?

Symbolically, what was the universe doing with this endless, revolving parade of porch callers?

Was the modern kingdom continually testing her perimeter, sending an escalating sequence of solicitors, evangelists, and inspectors just to check if she was still tethered to the collective grid?

Was reality probing her edges to see if she still felt an ounce of guilt for prioritizing her own peace? Or was each unannounced knock a living question without a neat answer, quietly asking how much of her sovereignty she was still willing to surrender just to appear polite?

Molly did not need to solve the riddle before noon.

She simply went back to her creative work.

The quiet returned to the bungalow. The outside world was left right where it belonged: on the other side of a solid door, facing down a “No Soliciting” sign and a plastic camera lens, while the room inside remained undisturbed and completely hers.

She is thinking about what it means to have somewhere to recline. For almost a decade, Molly didn’t really have a couch.

• There was the tiny house.

• There was the bus.

There were temporary downtown spaces and a larger loft-like space that was technically home, but often behaved more like an art studio. There was always some version of making the available space work.

Molly became very good at that.

She could make a life …fit almost anywhere. And now, rather unexpectedly, she has this little couch.

It lives in the study, which is actually one of the spare bedrooms in the 1940s bungalow she shares with her husband and two cats. The room contains her art, a vintage record player, and now this little modular creature that can be rearranged into different configurations… depending on what Molly apparently needs from a couch on any given day.

The “living” room is much larger. It is lovely, with sun bathing the floor while the breeze dances with the bohemian curtains. It is also open. It is her studio, a creative space, which she is immensely grateful for. However, Molly has discovered that open and restful are not necessarily the same thing.

The little study room hosting her couch-ette feels different. It feels enclosed.

A cave.

That word came to Molly before she had really thought about why. A cave. Not a hiding place, exactly. More like a place where the walls are participating in the experience. A place where Molly doesn’t have to visually hold the whole room. She can sit down. She can put on a record, while looking at her paintings.

She can recline.

And there is something about that last word that keeps catching her…

Recline.

Molly realizes she hasn’t had much of an in-between place.

• There has been work.

• There has been sleep.

There has been making things, figuring things out, moving things around, adapting, surviving, creating. But the couch occupies a strange little territory between all of those things.

• It isn’t bed.

• It isn’t work.

It isn’t quite doing nothing, either. It is being horizontal without being unconscious. It is being still without having to declare the day over. It is a place where the body can say:

I don’t have anywhere else I need to be right now.

And perhaps that is what feels so luxurious. Not the couch itself. The permission implied by the couch. Molly suddenly thinks:

I have become a person who can recline.

The thought makes her laugh a little. It sounds ridiculous. But she knows exactly what she means. For years, space was something Molly navigated. Now, for perhaps the first time in a long time, she is beginning to experience space as something she can simply inhabit.

• She doesn’t have to be moving through it.

• She doesn’t have to be making it useful.

There is a room. There is a little couch. There is a record player. There are Quantum MeMoir paintings on the walls. And Molly can sit in the middle of it all and not produce anything.

Which, for Molly, may actually be quite an accomplishment.

She wonders what happens to a creative mind when it finally has somewhere to wander without being chased. Maybe creativity doesn’t always arrive because Molly sits down to create. Maybe sometimes it arrives because Molly sits down.

Period.

And if she does get the urge to move…

The couch is modular. She can rearrange it. That seems appropriate. Molly has spent much of her life rearranging herself to fit the spaces she inhabited. Now she has a space that can rearrange itself a little to fit her.

She likes that.

There is something quietly profound about it. Not profound enough to embroider on a pillow. Just profound enough to notice.

Molly looks around the little room again. Somewhere in the middle of all of it, a woman who spent years learning how to “make do” is discovering something she may not have had much practice with at all:

Dwelling.

Not moving through.

Just being here.

Reclining.

Letting the couch hold the weight for a while. No plans. No projects. No immediate need to become a more productive version of herself. Just Molly, her couch, and the radical possibility that this is a perfectly acceptable way to spend an afternoon.

…gently nudging her arm.

It was an entirely ordinary morning, but Molly was currently executing a full internal audit on her own moral worth because she had just gently nudged a four-legged creature off her desk.

The cat was relentless. She wanted to snuggle any warm part of Molly she could get close enough to… and receive steady, rhythmic affection of hand-to-fur…

Over and over again…

It was a sweet, cozy proposition, the kind of simple, story-like moment that standard-issue human beings were supposed to cherish.

Except Molly’s sinuses were already threatening a full revolt. The air in the room felt refreshing. Yet, her throat had that familiar warning tickle, and she knew with absolute, unglamorous certainty… that if she inhaled cat dander directly into her nasal passages for the next twenty minutes, her head would feel like a pressure cooker by noon!

So, Molly set a boundary.

She got the cat bed and sat it on the floor next to her desk, and said, in a calm, reasonable voice meant for a rational adult, “Not right now.”

The cat did not accept the boundary. She sat on the edge of the desk, squinted her eyes with profound, silent judgment, and began to groom a front paw with exaggerated offense.

…and that was when the wave hit.

Sitting there in her studio, Molly felt a sudden, ridiculous spike of guilt and shame. It bloomed right in the center of her chest… a heavy, suffocating sensation… suggesting she was a cold, unfeeling monster who had just denied an innocent animal the basic right to love and be loved.

Desperately wishing she could explain her sensitive mucous membranes to a feline who didn’t care about human biology. Molly actually found herself internally shaming herself for setting a boundary with a creature that licked its own butt, right before rubbing on her face.

Molly caught her mind doing the quiet, wild mental architecture she had practiced for a decade. She watched herself… as if from the corner of the room.

It was absolutely absurd.

Molly had a remarkable talent for turning tiny, everyday choices into high-stakes moral trials requiring a unanimous vote from the jury before she could be excused.

She had spent a lifetime waiting for the voices of her family, or a schizophrenic stalker, or a pushy solicitor on the porch, or a domestic animal wanting attention, to grant her permission to protect her own physical, mental and emotional well-being.

A boundary, Molly realized, is rarely an obvious wall built with stones and mortar. Most of the time, it is just a tiny, invisible choice made on a quiet morning. It is saying no to the extra project, no to the phone call during time-off to recuperate, no to being an audience for someone else’s script, and no to burying one’s face in cat fur when the sinuses are already compromised.

Molly had mistakenly assumed that if she set a boundary, the other party will nod politely and say, “Ah, yes! I completely understand your physiological limits.

I shall respect your right to be.”

When the cat merely glares and turns her back, Molly folded. She assumed the boundary failed. Or even worse, she assumed her cat’s mild disappointment as her own moral failure.

Molly looked at the cat. The cat was no longer thinking about Molly at all.

…she had moved on to investigating a sunbeam on the studio floor.

Permission…

Molly caught herself thinking, was never something handed down by a cat, or a stranger, or a culture that demands constant, soft compliance.

Boundaries are not bilateral contracts that require two signatures.

Molly stretched her arms above her head and took a clear, unobstructed breath through her nose. It felt clean. She felt intact. She reached back down for her coffee mug, leaving the cat to negotiate her own terms with the sunbeam.

The first time the young men appeared on the porch, Molly simply let the knock echo into the quiet house and stayed put. The second time, she opened her kitchen window just enough to explain that she was in the middle of cooking and dismissed them. The third time, she let the knock go unanswered again.

By the fourth visit, Molly decided to make the boundary explicit. She posted a No Soliciting sign on the door, figuring that clear print “Do Not Knock” would save everyone another awkward exchange.

It did not.

Molly was deep in an afternoon nap, floating under the heavy fog of cold medicine, when a sharp rap on the wood woke her up. She lay there disoriented, processing the sound through a haze of decongestants. She didn’t answer right away, but curiosity eventually dragged her out of bed. Surely, she reasoned, nobody would knock on a door with a fresh sign, unless it was a neighbor in trouble or a delivery driver dropping off a parcel.

“Who is it?” she called out, creeping to the entry and peering through the window pane.

There stood the familiar crisp white shirt.

There was a specific shade of bleached white that seemed unique to young men with clipboards and a mission. It was a white so bright it felt almost aggressive in the mid-afternoon Missouri sun, like a beacon asking to be seen.

They were terribly polite. That was the tricky part. The kingdom of modern manners had trained Molly to treat politeness like an unspoken treaty. If someone approached a doorway with a pleasant expression and a soft cadence, the social code dictated that she was required to stand there, nod along, and absorb whatever script was being delivered.

Except this was visit number four in two weeks.

After he announced where they were from, Molly asked through the window if he was able to read the “No Soliciting” sign on the door. The young man offered a bright, practiced smile and explained that they were not soliciting at all. They were simply inviting her to church.

“Well then you are selling something,” Molly said.

Rather than taking the exit ramp, he immediately launched into a debate, insisting that handing out an invitation was fundamentally different from selling a product.

Standing there in her socks, head heavy with cold medicine, Molly caught herself entering a truly absurd psychological trap. She was actively debating the formal semantics of commerce on her own threshold, waiting for a nineteen-year-old stranger to concede the argument so she could feel justified in ending the conversation.

But a front door does not consult a visitor before it locks. A wooden frame does not ask a solicitor for permission to be solid. Molly realized she did not need him to agree with her sign or validate her right to be uninterrupted in her own home.

“You need to leave,” she said.

Instead of stepping off the porch, the young man pivoted without missing a beat, smoothly asking if she had any neighbors nearby that she might recommend.

Molly realized she had wandered into one of those conversations where the other person doesn’t actually have to convince you of anything. They just have to keep talking until you become too socially exhausted to continue.

And Molly was falling into the trap.

She was waiting for him to agree with her.

Why?

Why did she need this young stranger to agree that her own sign meant what it said?

“Do not knock or ring doorbell. Don’t Make it Weird”

Molly cut him off mid-sentence. She didn’t pad her response with polite cushioning or apologize for being sick. She simply repeated herself, flatter and firmer this time.

“You need to leave.”

The debate died instantly in the afternoon air. The young man paused, his practiced momentum finally hitting a proverbial brick wall. Then came the shuffling sound of rubber soles turning on concrete and the light whisperer of voices down the sidewalk toward the neighbors.

Molly stood still as quiet returned to the house, entirely her own. The lesson was almost insultingly simple. A boundary was never an argument she had to win. It was just a piece of solid oak she had to stop opening.

Around her, six seasons move in a circle. Winter becomes early spring. Early spring becomes late spring. Summer reaches its height. Early fall begins the inward turn. Late fall gathers what remains.

I have seen it as a form of scientific note-taking.

Not science in the institutional sense of laboratories, instruments, and published conclusions, but science in its oldest and simplest sense: observation, inquiry, experimentation, pattern recognition, and the willingness to revise what we think we know.

The Quantum MeMoir Mind Map gives an experience a center, then asks us to move around it. To look again. To change perspective. To notice what becomes visible from another angle.

Recently, while revisiting the work of Stuart Wilde*, I began wondering whether this way of mapping experience might point toward a much larger hypothesis about consciousness itself.

What if the visible world is only one expression of a larger Recursive Field of information?

And what if consciousness is capable, under certain conditions, of perceiving more of that field than our ordinary waking awareness normally allows? I am not presenting this as established science. I am treating it as a thought experiment worth exploring.

Instead of immediately deciding that unusual experiences are either supernatural truth or meaningless fantasy, I am interested in a third position:

Enter the inquiry. Observe carefully. Map what happens. Test what can be tested.

The Recursive Field

The first term I am using for this model is the Recursive Field. Recursive, meaning patterns repeating within larger patterns.

The Recursive Field is the underlying informational environment as a whole.

I use the word recursive because the same kinds of patterns seem to appear again and again at different scales: within a moment, within a life, within relationships, within nature, within cycles of time, and within the geometry of the Quantum MeMoir Thought Forms themselves.

A pattern can contain smaller versions of itself while also belonging to something larger.

In this exploration, our ordinary physical experience would not necessarily be separate from some invisible realm. It would be one expression of a larger whole.

The visible world of humans may be what the Recursive Field looks like when filtered through the biological senses, nervous system, memory, language, culture, and the particular position of an embodied observer.

The brain, from this perspective, would not necessarily create the totality of consciousness any more than a radio creates the broadcast it receives.

That analogy is only a hypothesis. But it creates a useful question:

What changes when we adjust the receiver?

The Transverse Field

Within the larger Recursive Field, I am calling the normally less-visible aspect of experience the Transverse Field. The word comes partly from my exploration of Stuart Wilde’s idea of a reality existing at a 90-degree relationship to ordinary perception.

The physics is more nuanced than saying another dimension literally sits ninety degrees beside us.

Light itself offers an interesting analogy. Light travels forward, while aspects of the electromagnetic wave move in directions perpendicular to that path. Borrowing a concept from signal processing, I began thinking about experience as if it contained more than one channel of information. Signal science also uses the idea of two related components that are separated by 90 degrees of phase.

The scientific concepts do not prove the existence of another spiritual realm. But they offer an intriguing conceptual model.

A ninety-degree shift does not simply mean turning around and looking in the opposite direction. A 180-degree turn gives us the reverse of the same line.

A 90-degree relationship introduces another channel. Another aspect of the same signal. Another way of receiving information.

Neither idea proves another realm exists, but both give me a useful way to imagine information arriving through more than one channel.

That distinction became central to this inquiry.

The 90° Turn

In Quantum MeMoir, I am beginning to think of the 90° Turn not as literally turning the body ninety degrees, but as changing the way we perceive.

It is a shift away from direct, narrow, physical attention toward a softer and more peripheral state of awareness.

Instead of asking only:

What am I looking at?

we might ask:

What is happening at the edge of my awareness?

Instead of immediately interpreting:

What does this mean?

we might first ask:

What appeared?

The turn might happen from analysis into sensation. From words into images. From focal vision into peripheral vision. From conscious thought into Active Imagination. From an object into the pattern surrounding the object. From the foreground into the background.

The 90° Turn is therefore a perceptual practice. It is a deliberate attempt to change channels.
